Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI) has implemented a significant change to its leadership structure, reducing its management team by nearly 20%, as advised by an external evaluation.

The Crown corporation confirmed to CBC News this week that it had trimmed its management roster from 174 positions to 142.

The decision followed a thorough review by consultancy firm EY, which revealed inefficiencies within the organizational hierarchy, including project overspending due to a lack of clarity in terms of responsibilities.

CBC News cited an MPI spokesperson as saying in an emailed statement: “While the organization has parted ways with a small number of leaders… the majority of the reduction has been reached by holding vacancies and rightsizing roles.”

Earlier this year, MPI promoted vice president and chief customer officer Satvir Jatana to president and chief executive.

At the time, MPI board chair Carmen Nedohin said: “MPI is a strong organization full of talented and committed people, but it is in need of a reset.

“Satvir’s insight as a long-term employee, breadth of experience as a leader, and strong desire to unite and engage MPI’s team makes her the right person to lead MPI into a new chapter.”

EY’s final report on the organizational review of MPI was published in January.

Concluding the organizational review is the latest step taken by MPI’s board of directors to stabilize the corporation following a challenging and tumultuous period of instability that included a 10-week strike,” MPI noted when the review closed.

For Nedohin, the recommendations will be instrumental in MPI’s sustainable evolution.

She stated then: “This report by EY provides MPI with sound guidance and well-informed advice that will help the corporation evolve sustainably, enhance its services, and better respond to the needs of stakeholders.”
